If you need to be able to quickly listen to the audio youve recorded, its easy to jump into a multiplex. The UX560s menu system also makes it simple to separate recording settings (such as sampling rate and bit rate) from recording itself. The recorder supports 24-bit, 96kHz audio, and will automatically switch to that setting when you turn it on. The most recent iOS and Android apps (both free) also let you control the device while the recordings are running, but the Sony app lets you stream audio from the device back to the iOS or Android app, so you can quickly scrub and pause events and listen in real-time as you go. (The second-best app for iOS is Audacity, a free, open-source audio editing program from the developers of Windows XP. It also offers this feature, as well as MIDI recording, making it a favorite for musicians.)

Then you have to decide whether you want to record the audio that you capture, and the UX560s audio quality isnt as big a deal. We generally preferred audio quality when recording to an SD card, though we did find that some people could hear a slight pop when saving as an MP3, especially if the recorder is set to save files to a microSD card. When recording to the UX560s internal speaker, no pop occurred, though some people may find the audio tinny. That said, audio from the UX560s speaker is very slightly louder than an earphone plugged into a computer. And the UX560s high battery life means you neednt worry about running out of juice in the middle of a recording session.
The battery life is nice, and although the UX560s doesnt have a specific battery gauge, it has solid, audible beeps. Youll also find three buttons on the left side of the recorder: The record button, the next/previous buttons, and the power button. To use the recorder, simply plug it in and turn it on. When it starts, youll be asked whether you want to record to a USB drive or an SD card. When youre done recording, disconnect the recorder, hit the power button, and its done. Thats about it. At most, the UX560s took a few hours to fully charge.
