The film was Soundarya's debut in Tamil cinema and was shot entirely at Sethumadai near Pollachi. The music was composed by Ilaiyaraaja, with one song by his son Karthik Raja. They keep in touch through letters and phone calls, and eagerly await their reunion. Kathirvelu arranges their marriage after Chinthamani's exams are over, and Ponnumani goes to the railway station to receive her. However, he is shocked to see her in a disheveled and disturbed state, unable to recognize him or anyone else.
Ponnumani learns that Chinthamani was raped by Uday Prakash, a rich and spoiled brat who was her classmate. He had lured her to his farmhouse on the pretext of helping her with her studies, and then forced himself on her. He also threatened to kill her if she told anyone about it. The trauma of the incident left Chinthamani mentally unstable and pregnant with Uday Prakash's child.
Ponnumani is devastated by this news, but he does not abandon Chinthamani. He decides to marry her and take care of her and her child. He also confronts Uday Prakash and demands that he marry Chinthamani and accept his responsibility. Uday Prakash refuses to do so, and insults Ponnumani and Chinthamani. He also tries to kill Chinthamani by setting fire to her house. In a fit of rage, Ponnumani kills Uday Prakash and surrenders to the police.
Ponnumani is sentenced to five years in prison for his crime. During this time, Chinthamani gives birth to a baby girl, who is named Sindhu after the river that flows near their village. She also recovers from her mental illness with the help of Kathirvelu and Manorama, a kind-hearted woman who runs an orphanage. They also take care of Sindhu as their own granddaughter.
After five years, Ponnumani is released from jail and reunites with Chinthamani and Sindhu. He is overjoyed to see Chinthamani's recovery and Sindhu's growth.
