Britain's National Health Service recommends that people get at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise a week. The study found that this level of exercise could prevent 1 in 6 early deaths, but getting more than that only delivered marginal benefits.


Just 11 minutes of moderate physical activity a day could lower the risk of early death by 23%, a review of data from more than 30 million adults suggests. If everyone could meet this daily target, 1 in 10 early deaths worldwide could be prevented, the study authors propose.


Heart disease is the leading cause of death worldwide (opens in new tab), responsible for 17.9 million deaths annually. The new study found that just 75 minutes of physical activity per week, or 11 minutes a day, is linked to a 17% lower risk of cardiovascular disease. The same amount of physical activity was linked to a 7% lower risk of developing cancer, a disease responsible for an average of 9.6 million deaths (opens in new tab) per year globally.


"It is surprising to some just how little things can add up, like taking the stairs instead of the lift, or walking to the local shop instead of driving," Brage said. Activities like brisk walking, dancing, going for a gentle bike ride and playing outdoors count towards your 11 minutes a day, but Brage said the same benefit can be felt by doing vigorous, rather than moderate, exercise for half the time.


The study only included activity outside of a person's occupation, meaning a manual laborer who did 75 minutes of physical activity outside of work each week was classed the same as an office worker with the same recreational exercise regime. This was partly because occupational activity is harder to measure precisely, Brage told Live Science.


A large, new study has found that just 11 minutes of aerobic exercise daily, at moderate to vigorous energy levels, can lower cancer, cardiovascular disease, and premature death risks. The Washington Post says merely walking for 11 minutes can do the job, lowering premature death risk by 25%.


Finding time in your busy day to exercise is a challenge. But new research suggests that you may only need 11 minutes of exercise each day to live longer, according to a study published in the British Journal of Medicine.


This new study found that people who sat for about eight to 10 hours daily, but managed to clock about 11 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous exercise a day, were less likely to die than those who only got about two minutes of exercise a day.


To put this in perspective, the physical activity guidelines for Americans suggest that adults should get 150-300 minutes a week (or 20-45 minutes a day) of moderate-intensity activity, or 75-150 minutes a week (or 10 to 20 minutes a day) of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity. Or, an equivalent combination of moderate-to-vigorous-intensity aerobic activity.


Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death around the world. However, the new research indicates as many as 1 in 10 early deaths could be prevented if everyone managed at least half of the recommended 150 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each week.


Overall, 75 minutes of moderate intensity activity was linked with a 23 percent lower risk of premature death. It also reduced the risk of cardiovascular disease by 17 percent and cancer by 7 percent.


Researchers found even greater benefits for specific cancers. Meeting the 75 minutes per week goal was linked with a 14 to 26 percent lower risk of head and neck, myeloid leukemia, myeloma and gastric cardia cancers.


Aerobic exercise includes activities like walking, dancing, running, jogging, cycling, and swimming. Overall, 75 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise each week was associated with a 23% decline in the risk of premature death. In addition, this amount of exercise lowered the risk of cardiovascular disease by 17% and the risk of cancer by 7%.


Researchers identified greater benefits for certain types of cancer. For example, individuals who exercised for 75 minutes exercise each week, or 11 minutes a day, experienced a 14% to 26% lower risk of head and neck, myeloid leukemia, myeloma, and gastric cardia cancers.


With the exception of work-related activities, 2 out of 3 individuals reported activity levels lower than the recommended 150 minutes per week. Meanwhile, fewer than 1 in 10 exercised more than 300 minutes each week.


"If you are someone who finds the idea of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week a bit daunting, then our findings should be good news," said study author Soren Brage of the Medical Research Council Epidemiology Unit at the University of Cambridge.


"This is a compelling systematic review of existing research," said CNN Medical Analyst Leana Wen, an emergency physician and public health professor at George Washington University, who was not involved in the study. "We already knew that there was a strong correlation between increased physical activity and reduced risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer and premature death. This research confirms it, and furthermore states that a smaller amount than the 150 minutes of recommended exercise a week can help."
